Israel attacks Lebanon hours after ceasefire extension, killing six
Israel launched airstrikes on southern Lebanon hours after the ceasefire was extended. The attack killed six people. This is reported by the Guardian.
Lebanon said the Israeli army had struck a clinic in the south of the country. The facility is run by the Islamic Health Committee, which is linked to Hezbollah. The attack killed six people, including three paramedics.
The Israeli army claims that the target was Hezbollah militants who were allegedly preparing to fire rockets at its troops in southern Lebanon.
According to the publication, the new strikes occurred “just hours” after representatives of Israel and Lebanon concluded another round of talks in Washington. As a result of these talks, the parties agreed to extend the ceasefire for another 45 days. Currently, thousands of Israeli soldiers remain in a significant area of southern Lebanon.
On April 8, when the US and Iran agreed to establish a two-week ceasefire, Israel launched a massive attack on Lebanon. According to the Lebanese Civil Defense, cited by Reuters, 254 people were killed that day, and more than 1,100 were injured.
Against this backdrop, Iran announced a violation of the ceasefire. At the same time, Israel and the United States insisted that the ceasefire did not apply to Lebanon.
On April 14, the leaders of the countries began talks in Washington, mediated by the United States. Already on April 16, US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Lebanon had agreed to a 10-day ceasefire.
However, Israel was surprised by the US ban on attacking Lebanon. They stated that the agreement provided for Israel’s right to use military force even during a ceasefire – “for the purpose of self-defense, at any time, against planned, imminent or ongoing attacks.”
