Italy proposes to establish a global truce for the duration of the 2026 Olympics
Italy proposes to establish a global truce for the duration of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games. About this on the sidelines of the conference “ Italy – Latin American and Caribbean countries” Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said in Rome, reports ANSA.
He clarified that it is, in particular, about military actions in Ukraine and the Middle East.
“We must be champions of peace. We support the US plan for Gaza and, as Pope Leo said, we must never lose hope for peace. Rome and Italy become the crossroads of peace, development and growth. In view of the Olympic Games in Milan-Cortina, we are submitting to the UN a proposal for an Olympic truce for all wars, including Ukraine and the Middle East, Tajani noted.
The 2026 Winter Olympic Games will be held in the Italian cities of Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo from February 6 to 22.
Recall that on July 27, the International Olympic Committee announced that Russian and Belarusian athletes may be allowed to compete at the 2026 Olympics in Italy.
Probably, they will apply the same approach as at the 2024 Olympics in Paris: then Belarusian and Russian athletes had to meet strict criteria — qualify according to the sports principle and prove that they do not actively support the war in Ukraine and have no connections with the Russian military apparatus.
