Man who shot Robert Fico sentenced to 21 years in prison in Slovakia
The court found Juraj Cintula guilty in the case of the assassination attempt on the Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico and sentenced him to 21 years in prison. reports Noviny.sk.
On October 21, the Specialized Criminal Court in Banská Bystrica found Cintula guilty of committing a terrorist act against Robert Fico and sentenced him to 21 years in prison.
Prosecutor Katarina Gabčáková and the lawyer for the Slovak Prime Minister emphasized that the defendant’s guilt was fully proven, since he committed a particularly serious crime. At the same time, the defense lawyer demanded that the defendant’s actions be reclassified as an assault on an official, punishable by seven to 12 years in prison.
Juraj Cintula, 72, stated during the hearing that he only wanted to harm Robert Fico’s health so that he could no longer perform his duties as prime minister, and claimed that he had no intention of killing him.
The trial began on July 8 and consisted of eight main sessions. Even at the beginning of the trial, there was no doubt that the attacker would be found guilty. Even his lawyer, Namir Alasri, repeatedly emphasized that it was obvious who shot Robert Fico. Cintula was detained immediately after the crime, and the moment of the attack was recorded by a regional television camera in front of the building where it happened. Cintula himself admitted his guilt.
As a reminder, on May 15, 2024, after a government meeting, Robert Fico received gunshot wounds that posed a threat to his life. On March 17, 2025, the Prosecutor General’s Office of Slovakia officially charged Cintula with terrorism.
