Mark Rutte officially takes office as NATO Secretary General

From October 1, the former Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, officially became the new Secretary General of NATO, replacing Jens Stoltenberg in this position. This was reported by the press service of the Alliance.

“On this historic day, we say goodbye to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and welcome the new one — Mark Rutte.”, says the message.

During the handover ceremony, Stoltenberg noted that Rutte has a deep knowledge of NATO, as well as a high level of trust and respect within the Alliance. “Mark has the ideal experience to become the Secretary General of NATO,” Stoltenberg emphasized.

Stoltenberg also expressed confidence that the Alliance will be in good hands under Rutte’s leadership.

“Mark, NATO will be in good hands with you. It will be easier for me to leave knowing that you will take over as NATO Secretary General. I have to admit that I am leaving with mixed feelings – it is difficult to leave the Alliance that I have served for 10 years. All people, nations, with whom I have worked – I will miss it. But I leave knowing that we have achieved a lot together.”, – noted Stoltenberg.

Mark Rutte, in turn, thanked Stoltenberg for his leadership in difficult times. “We both believe that a strong transatlantic bond is a key foundation of our Alliance. I will do everything possible to ensure that this bond remains unshakable,” Rütte assured.

Among his priorities, the new NATO Secretary General noted further support for Ukraine and strengthening the Alliance’s collective security.

Rutte emphasized that Ukraine is “at the top of the list” of his priorities.

“Ukraine. We must ensure that Ukraine survives as a sovereign, independent, democratic nation.” said the new Secretary General of NATO.

As for Stoltenberg’s resignation, it was planned after his ten years at the helm of NATO, and he is now handing over leadership of the organization to his successor.
