MIA reveals area of land potentially contaminated with explosive devices

In Ukraine, about 139,000 square kilometers of territory remain potentially contaminated with explosive objects. About this reported Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Bohdan Drapyaty on his Facebook page after the fourth meeting of the sectoral working group “Humanitarian Demining”, which was chaired by the First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Svyridenko and the Ambassador of Japan to Ukraine Matsuda Kuninori.

Drapyatyi noted that the National Mine Action Strategy by 2033 envisages cleaning at least 80% of contaminated territories, which will allow these lands to be returned to safe and productive use. He emphasized that although this goal is extremely difficult, it is still achievable.

The deputy minister also emphasized the need to rationalize the use of resources, improve demining methods and introduce innovative technologies. According to him, during more than 950 days of full-scale war, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine demonstrated significant progress in the methods and dynamics of demining.

Drapyatyi added that the market for demining services in Ukraine is actively developing. In particular, a tender was held for the first time through the “Prozorro” system for the demining of agricultural lands, and an agreement has already been signed for the demining of 86 hectares in the Mykolaiv region.

Ukraine also receives significant international support, in particular from the demining coalition, co-chaired by Lithuania and Iceland, established in early 2024.
