More accounts than population: the new arithmetic of the Ukrainian banking system
At the beginning of 2026, Ukraine has 208.6 million accounts opened with payment service providers. Then there were 192.8 million. For a country with a population that is much smaller than this figure, this looks almost like a financial paradox: there are already several times more accounts than people.
The reason is that one Ukrainian is increasingly limited to one account. A salary card in one bank, a deposit or savings in another, a separate account for payments, online payments or business. The banking set of a modern user often consists of several accounts, and this is what inflates the overall statistics.
The financial system is served by 63 payment service providers – 60 banks and only three non-bank institutions. Despite the emergence of fintech companies, almost the entire mass of accounts remains in the classical banking system.
Of the total 208.6 million accounts, 207.5 million are opened in banks. The vast majority belong to ordinary citizens – almost 200.4 million. Entrepreneurs have 4.7 million accounts, and companies – another 2.4 million.
Non-bank payment institutions still occupy a modest niche. They have a little more than 1.11 million accounts. Almost all of them also belong to individuals – about 1.03 million. Entrepreneurs have 84.2 thousand accounts, and companies – only a few hundred.
If there are hundreds of millions of accounts, then there are significantly fewer customers. In total, 87.3 million customers use payment services in Ukraine. Over the year, their number increased by 4.4%.
Most of them are bank customers. They serve 86.3 million users: 82.8 million individuals, 2.5 million entrepreneurs and almost a million companies. In non-bank institutions, there are just over a million customers.
The growth in the number of accounts is largely explained by the active use of non-cash payments, the development of online banking and the emergence of new financial services. For many Ukrainians, several bank accounts are a common practice: separate accounts are opened for salary, savings, payments or entrepreneurial activity. As a result, the number of accounts in the country has long exceeded the population.
At the same time, not only the number of accounts is changing, but also the method of interaction with banks. Ukrainians are increasingly visiting branches. At the beginning of 2026, 91.79% of business entities and 84.51% of individuals were served remotely. For comparison, a year ago these figures were 89.85% and 82.87%, respectively. In fact, banking services are gradually moving to smartphones: payments, loans, deposits and even account opening are increasingly taking place without visiting a branch.
It should be noted that at present, the savings of Ukrainians are also growing. As of November 1, 2025, the total amount of deposits of individuals and entrepreneurs in banks reached 1.53 trillion hryvnias. In just one month, it increased by 19.4 billion hryvnias. At the same time, the amount of funds in depositors’ accounts in the national currency exceeded the mark of one trillion hryvnias for the first time.
In fact, modern banking statistics show not only the growth of the financial system, but also a change in the behavior of Ukrainians themselves. Money is increasingly rarely in one place, and financial life is increasingly divided between various services, accounts and applications. That is why the figure of over 208 million accounts today does not look like an anomaly, but a new norm of the digital economy.
