During the first six months of operation of the National War Memorial Cemetery (NWMC), 219 fallen defenders of Ukraine were buried. The Ministry of Veterans Affairs reported that most of the buried remains unidentified. During the first three months of the memorial’s operation, 185 burials took place, and another 34 – during the next three months.

“In total, 60 burials of the deceased (deceased) persons specified in part one of Article 15-1 of the law were carried out at the National War Memorial Cemetery, 8 of which were in a columbarium niche, and 159 burials of unidentified bodies (remains) of servicemen and police officers who died (died) as a result of armed aggression against Ukraine in accordance with Article 15-2 of the law”, – the ministry told the agency.

When asked how many families of the deceased have already expressed a desire to bury their loved ones at the National War Memorial Cemetery, but the burial has not yet taken place, the ministry replied that there are currently no burial contracts, as they are processed immediately and promptly.

The first burials of five unknown soldiers took place at the end of August 2025. The first identified fallen soldier, whose name was inscribed on temporary tombstones, was Viktor Klymchuk with the call sign “Gorets”.

Recently, the Supreme Court declared the allocation of a land plot for the NMVK illegal and overturned this decision, which caused criticism from the military.
