NATO announces large-scale nuclear exercises due to threat from Russia
On Monday, October 14, NATO will begin its annual nuclear exercise called Steadfast Noon, which will take place in Belgium, the Netherlands and other countries. This was announced by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. transmits Reuters.
“In an uncertain world, it is vital that we test and strengthen our defenses so that our adversaries know that NATO is ready and able to respond to any threat… All exercises will have a particular focus on the UK, the North Sea as well as Belgium and the Netherlands”, Rutte noted.
He added that the exercises will be focused on the territories of Great Britain, the North Sea, as well as Belgium and the Netherlands.
During the exercises, which will last about two weeks, about 2,000 servicemen will take part in missions simulating the transportation of American nuclear warheads on airplanes. At the same time, combat weapons will not be used during the exercises.
NATO officials emphasized that these exercises are not a response to Russia’s latest statements. Angus Lapsley, NATO’s assistant secretary-general for defense policy and planning, said Steadfast Noon aims to demonstrate the alliance’s nuclear power and deter any threat.
“We seek to deter any adversary, and above all Russia, in several different ways, including using conventional means of deterrence”, — Lapsley added during a press briefing.
