Former Federal Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz expressed his belief that Vladimir Putin is not capable of winning a war against Ukraine. The politician noted that the collapse of the Russian Federation’s plans was made possible thanks to the joint efforts of partners from the European Union and the United States of America.
According to the former head of the German government, the Kremlin’s actions turned out to be too costly for the Russian side.
“We did everything possible to prevent this maneuver by Putin from working… Since our goal in supporting Ukraine is to prevent Russia and Putin from winning the war. That was the task. And frankly, he will not win the war. This is the truth about what we can see,” the politician emphasized.
Olaf Scholz added that the armed conflict is meaningless even from the point of view of Russia’s national interests. He attributes the start of hostilities to the irrational decisions of a person who has significant influence on state processes.
“This war made no sense, even from a Russian point of view, but he started it, because we should never underestimate the senseless actions of an influential person. But in the end, he failed, and it cost Russia dearly”, — summed up the former Federal Chancellor of Germany.
A similar position was expressed by the current Federal Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, during a speech in the Bundestag. He noted that the Russian leadership should realize the lack of chances for a military victory in Ukraine. According to the head of government, if Moscow really wanted peace, the aggressive actions would have been stopped as soon as possible.
The consolidated position of the current and former German leadership demonstrates Berlin’s steadfast commitment to supporting Ukraine’s territorial integrity. International pressure and economic consequences continue to be key tools for containing Moscow’s strategic plans.
