Deferral Made New: How to Get a Religious Exemption from Mobilization

According to information from the website of the Judiciary of Ukraine, citizens of Ukraine have the right to postpone mobilization due to religious beliefs. However, in order to receive such a deferment, it will be necessary to confirm your affiliation with a religious organization whose faith does not allow the use of weapons.

The right to refuse military service based on religious beliefs is not absolute. The authorities will assess whether the postponement of mobilization is a proportionate restriction of your rights in view of public interests, the need to protect public order, protection of rights and freedoms, etc.

In order to get a deferment, you will need:

  • Provide proof that you belong to a religious organization that does not allow its members to use weapons. It can be a certificate from a religious community, a baptism certificate, etc.
  • Prove the legitimacy of your religious beliefs.
  • Explain why the refusal to perform military service due to religious beliefs does not contradict the interests of society, the protection of public order, the protection of rights and freedoms.
