Parliamentary committee recommended renaming the kopeck to shag

The Verkhovna Rada Committee on Finance, Tax and Customs Policy recommended that the parliament support bill No. 14093 on renaming the “kopeck” to “shag”. This was reported by the chairman of the committee, People’s Deputy from the “Servant of the People” party Danylo Getmantsev.

The initiator of the name change was the National Bank of Ukraine back in September 2024, and the bill itself was registered in the Verkhovna Rada on October 1. The explanatory note notes that currently the kopeck has actually been preserved only in states hostile to Ukraine. Of the 15 countries that were part of the USSR, this monetary unit, except for Ukraine, remained in only three – in Russia, Belarus and in unrecognized Transnistria.

People’s deputies also believe that the return of the name “shag” will contribute to the restoration of historical justice.

The document proposes that kopecks and shags be in parallel circulation for a certain time, while the National Bank does not plan to specially withdraw kopecks. The ratio between them is expected to be set at 1:1.
