Pension fund begins collecting overpayments from pensioners

Starting from July 2025, the Pension Fund of Ukraine will start automatically withholding from the pensions of some citizens amounts that were mistakenly or excessively calculated. We are talking about the so-called “overpayments” that occurred due to untimely updating of information in the system. About this reported press service of PFU.

The main reason for such overpayments is the lack of up-to-date data on the circumstances affecting the amount of the pension. Among the common reasons are the employment of a pensioner, the opening or closing of an FOP, a change of residence, the loss of preferential status or the registration of additional payments (for example, for a child under 18).

If these changes are not reported to the PFU service center within 10 days, payments continue to be calculated based on the old data, which will later be recognized as arrears. In such cases, the fund will deduct up to 20% of the pension monthly until the overpayment is fully returned. This process can take six to eight months, depending on the amount of overpayment.

However, if the overpayment was the result of a technical error or incorrect information provided by the employer, the situation will be considered individually. In such cases, it is recommended to contact the territorial branch of the fund.

In order to avoid such situations, pensioners are advised to regularly check their personal data in the electronic cabinet on the PFU portal and promptly report any changes — in particular, their place of residence, social status, or the fact of employment. This is especially true for long-term retirees who are returning to professional activity.

Information about overpayment is sent to pensioners by mail or through an electronic cabinet. Voluntary refunds are exempt from fines, but ignoring the requirements can lead to the limitation of payments and the application of additional sanctions.
