Poland should shoot down Russian missiles if the nuclear power plant is in danger: Sikorsky

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski believes that his country has a legal right to shoot down Russian air targets over Ukraine if they pose a threat to Ukrainian nuclear power plants. He made this statement did in an interview with the BBC.

As part of the conversation, Sikorsky was asked about where Warsaw draws the “red lines” in its policy regarding Russia and Ukraine, and whether he believes that Poland can intercept Russian missiles that are in Ukrainian airspace.

“The Chernobyl nuclear accident was in Ukraine. Imagine that one of the Russian drones or missiles will go off course and not fly to Poland or Romania, as has already happened, but will hit one of the Ukrainian nuclear power plants. I believe that we should help Ukraine protect its nuclear power plant from such stray Russian missiles”, – emphasized the head of the Polish Foreign Ministry.

To a clarifying question about the legal basis of such actions, the minister emphasized that this is his personal point of view, but legally Poland would have the right to self-defense. At the same time, he noted that currently no decisions have been made in this regard.

Earlier, Sikorsky emphasized that Poland and other neighboring countries of Ukraine have a “constitutional obligation” to shoot down Russian missiles before they cross their airspace.
