Putin said that Russia will deploy a new strategic nuclear missile “Sarmat” at the end of this year
The Russian president said that Russia will deploy a new strategic nuclear missile, the Sarmat, later this year. He called the weapon “the most powerful in the world.” Reuters reports this.
“It has the ability to penetrate all existing and future missile defense systems,” Putin said.
According to him, the warhead’s power is more than four times greater than any Western analogue. The declared range of the missile is more than 35 thousand kilometers.
Reuters notes that the deployment of the Sarmat was preceded by years of failures and delays. The missile is designed to deliver nuclear warheads to hit targets in the United States or Europe.
Western analysts believe that Putin has exaggerated the capabilities of some of Russia’s new generation nuclear weapons. Previous launches of the Sarmat have been unsuccessful. In particular, one of the tests in September 2024 left a deep crater on the launch pad.
“The deployment of launchers equipped with the Sarmat missile system will significantly increase the combat capabilities of ground-based strategic nuclear forces in terms of guaranteed destruction of targets and solving strategic deterrence problems,” said the commander of the Russian Strategic Missile Forces, Sergei Karakayev.
Earlier, The Telegraph wrote that Russian nuclear threats could become a prerequisite for an operation under a “foreign flag.” In February, Russian officials stated that Great Britain, with the support of France, was supplying Kyiv with nuclear weapons and “dirty bombs.”
