Refugee children can complete a shortened course of study according to the Ukrainian program
Currently, about 400,000 Ukrainian children study in schools abroad. Pupils who were forced to leave the country because of the war continue their studies in Ukrainian schools (distance, external or family-based). This creates an increased burden for children, who often experience stress due to moving and the need to adapt in a new country. The Ministry of Education and Science is introducing steps to reduce student workload.
General subjects such as mathematics, chemistry, and biology may not be retaken in Ukrainian schools – grades for them are automatically transferred from the child’s report card in a foreign school. As for specifically Ukrainian subjects (Ukrainian language and literature, history of Ukraine, geography), the Ministry of Education and Culture has created a shortened course that should help children learn the main points of the program faster.
The courses are also suitable for children from the occupied territories and students who, for one reason or another, had to skip school.
“The programs can be used in classrooms to make up for educational losses, targeting students in grades 5-11 who need additional classes to master material in core subjects and to make up for what students missed due to the war. They can also be used by organizations and institutions that making up for educational losses during children’s stay in camps and/or in Sunday schools,” the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine reported.
Teachers who will work with children under a shortened program have the right to adapt and change courses, taking into account the educational needs of students.
