Russia benefits from distraction in the Middle East: EU Council President
President of the Council of the European Union Antonio Costa said that conflicts in the Middle East are distracting attention from the Ukrainian front and strengthening Russia’s positions. He said this at the EU Ambassadors’ Conference.
Costa stressed the importance of a multidimensional foreign policy and active cooperation with the international community to support the principles of the UN Charter and international law. He stressed that the EU must remain a reliable defender of the international order, avoid unilateral actions and advocate multilateral solutions in global politics.
The President of the EU Council noted that the war in the Middle East, in particular the actions of Iran and its allies, poses serious threats to the region and distracts attention from Russia’s war against Ukraine.
“So far, there is only one winner in this war – Russia. It is gaining new resources to finance its war against Ukraine, as energy prices are rising. It is profiting from the redirection of military potential that could otherwise be directed to support Ukraine. And it is benefiting from the reduced attention to the Ukrainian front, as the conflict in the Middle East comes to the fore,” Costa said.
He also stressed the EU’s role in protecting human rights, supporting peaceful conflict resolution and ensuring nuclear security.
Kosta stressed that the EU’s unwavering support at the financial, political, diplomatic and security levels is needed to strengthen Ukraine and achieve a just peace. He called on all countries to exercise restraint, avoid escalating conflicts and return to the negotiation process, noting that global stability and European security are closely linked to support for Ukraine.
