Russia condemns new US sanctions against the energy sector, calling them an attempt to undermine the Russian economy and destabilize world markets

Russia criticized the US sanctions against its energy sector introduced on January 11, calling them an attempt to undermine the Russian economy and destabilize world markets. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia stated that, despite the restrictions, the country will continue the implementation of large oil and gas projects. It is reported Reuters.

The Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the “hostile” actions of Washington, announced a day earlier, and promised to adapt its foreign policy strategy in response. Representatives of the department called the sanctions an attempt to harm the Russian economy even at the cost of risk to global markets. They also accused the US of political pressure ahead of the end of Joe Biden’s presidential term.

These sanctions became one of the most extensive measures introduced by the United States against Russia’s oil and gas revenues. They aim to weaken the Kremlin’s financial base and give Ukraine and the new Donald Trump administration more leverage in negotiations to end the war.

It will be recalled that the US Treasury Department imposed restrictions against Russian energy giants Gazprom Nafta, Surgutnaftogaz and 183 vessels used to transport Russian oil. Many of these vessels belong to the so-called “shadow fleet” – outdated tankers operated by non-Western companies.

According to the US Treasury, Gazprom Nafta and Surgutnaftogaz produce more than a million barrels of oil a day, generating about $23 billion in annual revenue.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the new sanctions, stressing that they will deal a significant financial blow to Russia.

“The less income Russia receives from oil, the sooner peace will be restored”, — noted Zelensky.

The sanctions are part of international pressure on Russia aimed at limiting its financing of the war in Ukraine. At the same time, Russia assures that they will continue their energy activities and adapt to new economic realities.
