Shmyhal warned Fico that there will be no transit of Russian gas through Ukraine
Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal spent negotiations with the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, regarding issues of European energy security.
“Ukraine’s priority is guaranteed energy security for the whole of our Europe and, in particular, an uninterrupted supply of natural gas in the winter period. Quite a lot has been done over the past years to ensure a reliable supply of gas and to make it impossible to use any kind of energy as a weapon, which for decades has been a common practice for Russia in relations with neighboring countries and the European Union”, – noted the head of the Ukrainian government.
Shmyhal also emphasized that Ukraine fully fulfills its obligations within the framework of the Association Agreement with the European Union.
“Therefore, if the European Commission officially appeals to Ukraine regarding the transit of any gas, except for Russian gas, we will, of course, discuss it and be ready to implement relevant agreements based on the principles of energy security of both the entire EU and each European nation. Agreement Agreement between Ukraine and Russia on gas transit expires on January 1, 2025 and will not be extended., he emphasized.
According to Shmyhal, Russia’s energy exports serve as a source of funding for an aggressive war against Ukraine and a means for further destabilization of European states. He added that the strengthening of sanctions by the EU is an important tool of pressure on Russia to achieve real peace.
