Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, more than 32,000 people have been killed and injured: UN

According to updated data, 6.5 million people have left the country as refugees, and another 3.5 million have become internally displaced persons. 

Since February 2022, the UN has recorded more than 32,100 casualties among the civilian population in Ukraine, including the dead and wounded. About this reported the representative of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on human rights, Dmytro Lubinets, in his Telegram channel, referring to the data of the analytical report of the Protection Cluster headed by the UNHCR.

The report indicates that the Russian invasion of Ukraine was accompanied by targeted attacks on civilians and infrastructure, forced displacement, sexual violence and a high risk of psychological harm.

More than 6.5 million people have become refugees and another 3.5 million have become internally displaced persons. Since February 2022, over 32,100 civilian casualties, including dead and wounded, have been recorded in Ukraine.

The UN notes that 92% of civilian deaths occurred as a result of the use of explosive weapons with a wide impact zone, and 4% – as a result of detonation on mines and explosive devices. The use of long-range missiles by the Russian Federation means that almost the entire territory of Ukraine is in danger.

“Direct damage to civil infrastructure over the past two years as of February 2024 was up to 138 billion euros. Residential construction was the most affected”, – noted Lubinets, quoting data from the report.

There were 1,742 confirmed attacks on medical facilities, resulting in 136 deaths and 311 injuries. Documented cases of sexual violence committed by the Russian military against persons of various ages from 3 to 70 years.

Ukraine is one of the most polluted countries in the world with mines and other explosive devices, which endangers the life and health of about 6.37 million people. Farmers have been particularly affected by landmines, with 128 deaths since February 2022. Mines are also dangerous for children.

The protection cluster recommends donors and international partners of Ukraine to continue financial support for child protection programs, organizations engaged in the prevention of gender-based violence, support for IDPs, and to promote mine action in Ukraine.

The Government of Ukraine is recommended to expand initiatives on child protection, reintegration of war veterans, and ensuring continuous access to social protection.

“For our institution, the protection of the rights of persons who suffered as a result of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation is a priority area of ​​work”, – noted the ombudsman of Ukraine.
