South Korea may join NATO’s arms procurement program for Ukraine

South Korea is discussing the possibility of joining NATO’s PURL initiative, which could include financing the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine, although Seoul is likely to focus only on the supply of non-lethal equipment, Yonhap reports. South Korea’s Foreign Ministry in Seoul is holding consultations with NATO on various formats of support for Ukraine, the agency said.

Among the options for cooperation, they are considering participation in the PURL program – an Alliance project aimed at purchasing American weapons for the Ukrainian Defense Forces. At the same time, diplomatic sources note that even if Seoul joins the initiative, it may limit itself to providing only non-lethal aid, without supplying heavy or combat weapons.

As Yonhap writes, since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, South Korea has mainly provided Ukraine with humanitarian support and non-lethal equipment. Joining the PURL program would be a new format of cooperation in military support for Ukraine.
