South Korea suspends download of Chinese AI DeepSeek

South Korea’s data protection regulator has announced a suspension of new downloads of Chinese AI app DeepSeek after the company admitted to failing to comply with certain privacy requirements. About this informs Reuters.

The Personal Data Protection Commission (PIPC) said that the service of the application will be restored after changes are made in accordance with the requirements of local law. The solution limits only new downloads, but the web version of DeepSeek remains available to users in the country.

Last week, the Chinese startup appointed legal representatives in South Korea and admitted that it partially failed to comply with data protection requirements, the PIPC said. Similar measures against DeepSeek were previously imposed by Italian regulator Garante, ordering the company to block the chatbot due to privacy policy violations.

Commenting on South Korea’s moves to restrict DeepSeek, a Chinese foreign ministry official said the country’s government attaches great importance to data protection and adheres to relevant laws and regulations.
