The decision that shook the front: comments on the consequences of the ban on the transfer of US intelligence to Ukraine

The war in Ukraine continues, and recent political events deal a serious blow to the Ukrainian army’s ability to fight the Russian Federation. The administration of Donald Trump decided to ban the transfer of US intelligence data to Ukraine, which made it significantly more difficult to strike Russian troops. This decision was made two days after Trump ordered to freeze military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. This move, in turn, was the result of a scandalous meeting in the White House on February 28, during which Trump and Zelensky publicly exchanged harsh statements.

This situation caused a great resonance among politicians, the military and the media. We are talking about the fact that the termination of the exchange of intelligence has become a serious blow to the defense capability of Ukraine and creates critical difficulties for the Armed Forces in deterring the Russian offensive. The Ukrainian military has already stated that this may lead to further losses at the front. Now the focus is on the question: will Ukraine find alternative ways to obtain intelligence, and how will this affect its ability to defend its own territories?

As informs the American magazine Time, all Western “partners” from the group of specialists who helped Ukraine receive and process satellite intelligence information at the military headquarters in Kyiv, left the country. A source close to the General Staff of Ukraine confirmed this, noting that “there is no one left”, but did not specify which “partners” we are talking about.

The publication notes that the decision of the administration of US President Donald Trump to limit Ukraine’s access to satellite images weakened the country’s defense capabilities, which in turn contributed to the advance of Russian troops on critical areas of the front. It also negatively affected the negotiating positions of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi. According to five high-ranking Ukrainian and Western officials, this decision has led to significant casualties among the Ukrainian military in recent days. One of the Ukrainian officers stated that due to this “pause” hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers died, and the lack of access to satellite information significantly strengthened the enemy’s position.

The officer also noted that the Armed Forces of Ukraine were forced to fight without some basic weapons systems not because of increased attacks by the Russian Federation, but because of “the withdrawal of the Americans from their commitments.” The situation was particularly acute in the Kursk region of Russia, where Ukrainian forces are trying to hold the positions captured since August 2024. Zelensky considers this region an important lever in potential negotiations on the exchange of territories with Russia.

However, after the end of intelligence sharing by the US, Russian troops, with the support of North Korean soldiers, began to actively advance, seeking to cut off Ukrainian supply lines in the region. This information is confirmed by actual maps of combat operations created by the Ukrainian Deep State OSINT project.

“After the suspension of intelligence sharing, the Russians began to advance rapidly, seeking to cut off Ukrainian supply lines. According to the military and according to recent maps from the analytical organization Deep State, the main supply route for Ukrainian forces is under constant fire. “It is very dangerous for our people,” said one of the sources.

The Ukrainian military also lost the ability to detect Russian bombers and planes in advance, which increases the risk of unexpected airstrikes. This reduces the time to warn the civilian population and the military about possible attacks.

The loss of American intelligence also negatively affected Ukraine’s ability to deliver pinpoint strikes on Russian targets. Previously, American HIMARS missile systems were used for this, which worked effectively thanks to data from US satellites. Now these opportunities are limited.” – writes Time.

In addition, on March 7, the “Military” publication, referring to several users, reported, that Maxar Technologies has stopped providing Ukraine with access to its satellite images. Although the official reason is called “administrative request”, in fact it is a consequence of the decision of the US administration to limit the transfer of intelligence to Ukraine. Maxar, which is one of the leading providers of commercial satellite imagery, has previously helped track the movement of Russian troops and record the effects of shelling in both Ukraine and the Russian Federation.

In response to this, the Ukrainian cyber community “Kyberboroshno” reported on its Telegram channel about the loss of access to satellite intelligence. Although the post did not specify which services it was referring to, the community clarified in the comments that it was the main Maxar Technologies service they used for intelligence gathering and analysis.

Maxar Technologies is one of the main suppliers of commercial satellite images, which have been widely used by the Ukrainian military, analytical groups and OSINT communities to track the movement of Russian troops, record the consequences of strikes on important objects, in particular in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine and directly in Russia. In addition, Maxar images were often used by the world media to analyze the situation at the front, illustrate military events and evidence of Russian aggression.
