The first burials at NVMK will begin in May 2025: Ministry of Veterans Affairs

Minister of Veteran Affairs of Ukraine Natalia Kalmykova reported about plans to begin burials at the National War Memorial Cemetery (NVMK) in May 2025.

“We plan to start the first burials in May this year,” Kalmykova said during the “hour of questions to the government” in the Verkhovna Rada on March 28.

We will remind that in October 2022, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the creation of the State Institution “National Military Memorial Cemetery” under the leadership of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs. In August 2023, the government approved the implementation of the NVMK project within the Gatna community near Kyiv until August 2025.

On March 27, 2024, the then v. at. Minister Oleksandr Porhun said that burials on the territory of the NVMK may begin at the end of summer or at the beginning of autumn of 2024. Later, he clarified that these dates are being moved to the beginning or middle of autumn.

On June 30, Porhun announced that the project of the first stage of construction passed the state examination with a positive conclusion. And on July 4, a tender was announced to find a contractor to implement the first phase of construction and design the second.

At the beginning of November 2024, NVMK concluded an agreement with “Ukrderzhbudexpertiza” regarding the technical supervision of the first phase of works, and on November 15, it announced the start of the installation of the drainage system and storm sewers.

On December 31, the institution announced its intention to start honor burials and reburials of defenders and defenders, as well as prominent Ukrainians of the 20th century who fought for independence, but were buried outside of Ukraine, in 2025.

In March 2025, DU “NVMK” announced a tender for 1.3 billion hryvnias for the construction of the second phase of the memorial cemetery in the Gatne community of the Fastiv district of the Kyiv region.
