The Minister of Internal Affairs of Bavaria calls to stop payments to Ukrainian men who are in Germany
The Minister of the Interior of Bavaria, Joachim Herrmann, advocated the termination of “Bürgergeld” social assistance payments to Ukrainian men of conscription age who are in Germany and evade military service.
About this was going on the air of the German TV channel Welt TV.
According to Herrmann, Germany should support Ukraine, but should not “reward” those who avoid military service. He also emphasized that there are thousands of Ukrainian conscripts in Germany who receive social assistance but do not participate in the defense of their country.
The minister criticized the lack of a mechanism for the distribution of Ukrainian refugees in the EU, noting that Germany accepted significantly more Ukrainians than other EU countries.
Herrmann’s position regarding payments to Ukrainian refugees is not new for the German opposition. The issue has been discussed since the end of 2023, especially against the background of the labor shortage in Germany. Earlier, representatives of German cities and communities and politicians called for reducing the amount of social assistance for Ukrainians who refuse to look for work.
At the beginning of May, Bundestag deputy Roderich Kiesewetter proposed to deprive Ukrainian men of “Bürgergeld” who are subject to mobilization in Ukraine, but do not want to register for the military.
