The number of Ukrainian refugees in the European Union is rapidly decreasing

Currently, about 4.3 million Ukrainians are under temporary protection in the European Union, but their number is rapidly decreasing. Where exactly and for what reasons does such migration take place?

According to the latter according to Eurostat data Ukrainian refugees leave from various EU countries, where they were granted temporary protection during the military conflict. Of particular note is the outflow from the following countries:

  • Italy (-18,125 people; -11.2%),
  • Poland (-3,235; -0.3%),
  • Estonia (-225; -0.6%),
  • France (-205; -0.3%);
  • Luxembourg (-10; -0.2%).

There are a total of 4,303,115 Ukrainians in the European Union who benefit from temporary protection, but during this year their number decreased by almost 10,000 people.

The following countries accepted the largest number of Ukrainian refugees:

  • Germany (1,270,150 people, 29.5% of the total number of refugees in the EU);
  • Poland (951,560 people, 22.1%);
  • Czech Republic (381,190 people, 8.9%).

The largest number of Ukrainians who migrated within European countries moved to:

  • Germany (+18,905, +1.5%);
  • Czech Republic (+8,155, +2.2%);
  • Spain (+2,830, +1.5%);

It should be emphasized that more than 98% of people in the EU are citizens of Ukraine, 46.1% of people are adult women, 33.2% are children and 20.7% are adult men.

 According to survey conducted by Vox Ukraine this year, 64% of Ukrainians who stayed abroad plan to return home. Also, most of those who have already returned would like to stay in Ukraine, while only 7% are considering the possibility of returning to EU countries. In addition, it was found that 53% of refugee adults were able to find work abroad, but almost a third felt that their skills were less qualified than in Ukraine.

We will give some more interesting data. 30% of families who left Zaporizhzhia region decided to return to their homeland. Every fifth family returned to Kherson region, and every third to Mykolaivsk. 37% of those who went abroad after the large-scale occupation have already returned to the Motherland. The main reason for emigrating abroad was the desire for security, but those who returned had various motives, including close relationships with families and friends in Ukraine, better employment opportunities. However, about 10% do not return to their homeland and are internally displaced persons who now live in other regions of Ukraine.

So, refugees are gradually returning to Ukraine, and this should be seen as a valuable asset, because many of them have acquired new skills that can help our country recover, and will also significantly improve the demographic situation.
