The Prosecutor General’s Office reported suspicions against individuals who embezzled 8 million hryvnias for the purchase of drones for the Armed Forces of Ukraine

In Sumy region, eight individuals have been charged with embezzlement of funds intended for the purchase of drones for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This was reported by the Prosecutor General’s Office.

According to the investigation, in June 2023, a serviceman organized a scheme involving officials of several communities and controlled individual entrepreneurs.

The perpetrators forged documents on behalf of the military unit – in particular, contracts, invoices and letters of inquiry regarding the purchase of quadcopters. Based on these fictitious documents, more than 15.6 million hryvnias were transferred from the accounts of four communities. The actual supply of equipment did not take place – the funds received were misappropriated and legalized by the participants in the scheme through a number of financial transactions.

Depending on their role in the crime, the defendants were notified of suspicion under Part 5 of Article 191, Part 2 of Article 209, Parts 1, 2 of Article 366 and Parts 3, 4 of Article 358 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Prosecutors of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Defense of the Central Region have already applied to the court with a request to appoint preventive measures to the suspects.

If proven guilty, they face a sentence of imprisonment for a term of seven to twelve years with confiscation of property and a ban on holding certain positions or engaging in certain activities for up to three years.

The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by investigators of the Main Investigation Department of the National Police of Ukraine under the procedural guidance of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Defense of the Central Region with operational support from the Counterintelligence Department of the National Police of Ukraine.
