The US House of Representatives voted to consider draft laws on aid to Ukraine
It is expected that the vote on the bill on aid to Ukraine in the US House of Representatives will take place today, April 20, around 8:00 p.m. Kyiv time. According to the agenda, the issue of aid to Ukraine comes immediately after the draft law on aid to Israel.
The long-awaited schedule for the vote of the Congress on aid to Ukraine and other partners was published on site House of Representatives.
People’s Deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak named “important and indicative” vote. His opinion is shared by Roman Shryk, who emphasized that everything could have been different, “if the speakers put the aid project to Ukraine to a vote in the fall of 2023.”
Edition The New York Times notes that the draft law on military aid to Ukraine, submitted by the Republican Party with the assistance of the Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson, is moving dynamically through Congress.
Despite opposition from radical Republicans, the bill has a chance of success thanks to the support of Democrats. This is a rare case, especially recently, emphasizes The New York Times. The reason for this is the compromising nature of the document. It does not fully meet the expectations of the Republicans, in particular regarding the control over the spent funds.
“Not ideal, but acceptable“, Johnson determined. The politician understands that with the advantage of Republicans over Democrats by only two votes and disagreements in the Republican Party itself, he must make concessions in order to attract Democrats as well. This finally brings the desired results, the publication concludes.
CNN in his article emphasizes that without the help of the USA, Ukraine is gradually losing its position in Donbas, risking losing the strategically important village of Ocheretyne. The US Department of Defense needs less than a week to deliver some of the new weapons to Ukrainian units if Congress approves an aid package on April 20-21.
The Washington Post, citing US officials, writes that the scope of the new aid package is still unclear, but it will almost certainly contain much-needed ammunition for the systems that the Ukrainian military relies on the most, including 155 mm shells. It is also likely that the Pentagon will provide Ukraine with air defense and ammunition for it.
In total, the draft law provides for 60 billion dollars to strengthen the defense power of Ukraine, while simultaneously financing US industry.
