“There is no real progress towards peace in Ukraine”: Latvian President on Trump-Putin meeting
Latvian President Edgars Rinkevičs commented on the results of the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. In his opinion, despite the negotiations, there is currently no real progress towards ending the war against Ukraine.
As reported Delphi, Rinkevichs emphasized that the coming weeks will show whether Russia is going to continue its tactics of delaying time, or whether it will really show readiness to find a solution and a real settlement.
“We see that the US president and Putin have talked quite a lot about what the next steps for a political settlement could be. Unfortunately, there is still no decision on a ceasefire, and Russia continues its aggression against Ukraine.” – emphasized the president of Latvia.
He also noted that the meeting itself should not be perceived as a completed stage, but as an integral part of a wider and much more complex process aimed at achieving a strong, stable and just peace for Ukraine.
According to Rinkevichs, an important point is that the US administration and Donald Trump personally are actively consulting both with European leaders and with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi.
“We are discussing further steps. If a broader agreement is reached and a peace treaty is concluded, it must have serious guarantees, including military ones.” – emphasized the president of Latvia.
At the same time, he acknowledged that this process will continue to face many difficulties and difficult situations, and will also require additional diplomatic efforts.
In conclusion, Rinkevichs added that the next week could be quite tense, as the meeting of the presidents of the USA and Ukraine and the continuation of consultations at the highest level are scheduled for Monday.
