Thousands of children were evacuated from areas near hostilities: what is known

Every month, thousands of civilians are evacuated from regions of Ukraine close to the zone of active hostilities. Families with children are subject to forced evacuation from dangerous areas. Little Ukrainians from Kharkiv, Donetsk, Kherson, Sumy and other regions are forced to leave their homes to escape the war.

Recent evacuations of children

This week, 89 children and their families were evacuated from separate settlements in Bogodukhiv, Izyum and Kharkiv districts. This was announced by the head of Kharkiv OVA Oleg Sinegubov.

In particular, 15 children were transported from the Zolochiv community to safe places. Four children were evacuated from the Boriv community, 40 children from the Dergachyv community and 30 from the Lipetsk community.

At the beginning of April, all children were also evacuated from the five-kilometer zone along the border with the Russian Federation of the Velikopysarov community in Sumy Oblast. Earlier, children from other border communities of the region were also transported to safe places.

“Today there are no children in the 5-kilometer zone. They evacuated voluntarily. A total of 80 children remained in the territory of the community. We also plan to take them out in the coming days,” noted the secretary of the Velikopysarov community Volodymyr Leonov.

Forced evacuation of families with children

More than a year ago, on March 7, 2023, the Cabinet of Ministers approved Mechanism of forced evacuation of children from zones of active hostilities.

The decision on the mandatory evacuation of citizens is made by regional military administrations, coordinating it with the military command bodies and the Coordinating Headquarters for Mandatory Evacuation of the Population. Forced evacuation of children is carried out accompanied by one of the parents, a person who replaces them, or another legal representative.

Starting from April 7 last year, 1,016 children and their families were transported from Donetsk region to safe places.

“All children have been evacuated from 56 designated settlements in the region. The forced evacuation of families with children from the settlements of the Bakhmut district has been extended and continues today – 13 children remain there at the moment. Namely, 5 children in Toretsk and 8 in Shcherbynovka. Forced evacuation of children from the settlements of Kurakhivska district, Pokrovsky district, started on March 8. There were 28 children in the settlements of Uspenivka, Gannivka, and Trudove. As of today, there are 2 children in one family in the village of Uspenivka, – reported the deputy head of Donetsk OVA. Oleksandr Shevchenko in the middle of April.

According to the report of the Ministry of Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories, during 2023, 2,940 children were evacuated from dangerous areas of the country.
