According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), during the period from 2014 to 2023, at least 63 285 people during migration around the world. As of 2024, there is no information yet.
According to IOM, more for all deaths and disappearances of migrants took place in the Mediterranean Sea – almost all of them 28 854. The second and third city occupied by Africa and Asia. More than a third of the dead migrants are residents of countries in a state of conflict – Afghanistan, Syria, Myanmar, Ethiopia.
For message representatives MOM, the largest number of dead migrants was recorded in 2023 – 8 565 case. Over 60% of them died as a result of drowning, 9% of deaths were caused by traffic accidents, 7% – by violence.
There were drownings of migrants associated with an increase in the number of ship accidents off the coast of Tunisia, while in previous years most deaths in the Central Mediterranean were recorded off the coast of Libya.
“The death toll in 2023 has tragically increased by 20% compared to 2022, underscoring the urgent need for action to prevent further loss of life”, – it is noted in reports IOM, which refers to data from the organization “Missing Migrants”.
In this regard, the governments of European countries are trying to restrain migration flows to themselves by providing financial assistance to the Mediterranean countries. In particular, the EU has promised to provide Egypt with 7.4 billion euros ($8 billion), considering it the best way to solve problems related to the influx of migrants.
Along with this, the governments of Italy, Great Britain, and Hungary consider curbing immigration to be one of their priority tasks. In turn, Pope Francis called for pan-European measures to influence migration to stop the Mediterranean from turning into a “sea of death”.
