Trauma in Ukrainian schools: increasing risks after returning to offline education

The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine published the report “On the state of injuries among students and employees of educational institutions for the year 2023”. The report shows a significant increase in student accidents after the return to the offline learning format. Last year, 3,879 accidents were recorded in schools.

The main cause of industrial injuries remains the human factor, shortcomings in the organization of labor protection, neglect of personal safety.  The trauma of children was influenced by: the war, the transition to distance learning, and then the return to the offline format.

73% of injuries suffered by children in Ukrainian schools during 2019-2023 occurred during breaks, physical education classes and active games. Last year, 139 accidents involving teachers were recorded, 8 of which resulted in death, and 7 resulted in serious injuries.
