Trump’s team is considering resuming the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline: FT
Some representatives of Donald Trump’s team are considering the possibility of restarting the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which could become one of the key aspects of potential peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. About this informs Financial Times. As noted in the publication, this initiative previously seemed unthinkable, but now it shows a tendency to bring Trump closer to Moscow.
According to the publication, the idea of this project belongs to Matthias Warnig, former CEO of Nord Stream AG. Warnig has close ties with Vladimir Putin – it is known that the head of the Kremlin once taught his children to ski in Davos and even invited him to his own father’s funeral.
Sources familiar with the negotiations report that Warnig offered to establish cooperation with the Trump team through American businessmen. The main goal of this project is not only economic profit, but also the use of the gas pipeline as a tool for potential diplomatic mediation in the settlement of the war in Ukraine.
If the deal is implemented, the US could gain unprecedented control over gas supplies to Europe. However, for this, it is necessary to cancel the sanctions against Russia, get the Kremlin’s consent to restore supplies, and obtain Germany’s permission to use the gas pipeline.
