Turkey claims to have intercepted a ballistic missile launched from Iran
The Turkish Ministry of Defense reported the interception of a ballistic missile that was launched from Iran and headed towards the country’s airspace.
According to the defense ministry, the incident occurred on Wednesday, March 4. Turkish air defense systems destroyed the missile after it flew over Iraqi and Syrian airspace.
“A fragment of a munition that fell in the Dörtyol district of Hatay province has been identified as part of an air defense missile that intercepted the threat after it was destroyed in mid-air. There were no deaths or injuries as a result of the incident,” the Turkish Defense Ministry said.
The ministry stressed that the country will respond decisively to any threats to its territory and airspace.
“We remind you that we reserve the right to respond to any hostile act directed against our country,” the ministry emphasized.
Turkey also called on the parties to the conflict to avoid actions that could further aggravate the situation in the region.
“In this context, we will continue consultations with NATO and other allies,” the ministry added.
Earlier, on March 2, a meeting of EU ministers was canceled in Cyprus after an Iranian drone attacked a British air base on the island. On the same day, another drone attack on a British base in Akrotiri was reported.
People were also evacuated from Paphos airport, which is located approximately 60 kilometers from the air base, due to the drone threat. After the incident, Greece announced the dispatch of two frigates and four F-16 fighter jets to Cyprus.
