Ukraine ranked seventh in the global ranking of countries with the highest level of brain drain
Ukraine ranked seventh in the global ranking of countries with the highest level of outflow of highly qualified specialists. According to data The Global Economy, in 2024 the country scored 8.4 points on the human flight index, which indicates a significant outflow of human and intellectual potential.
The study shows that the scale of this phenomenon remains high compared to other countries. Only Samoa, Palestine, Jamaica, Eritrea, El Salvador and Somalia recorded worse indicators. For comparison, the lowest outflow of specialists is observed in Australia, Norway, Sweden and Canada.
The outflow of people in Ukraine in recent years has shown consistently high values. The anti-record was recorded in 2023 – 8.9 points. The average value for the period since 2007 is 6.26 points, which keeps the country in the high-risk zone. The most optimal indicator of outflow of specialists in Ukraine was observed in 2018 – 4.9 points.
Experts warn that the high level of “brain drain” has long-term consequences for the country’s economy. The loss of intellectual capital is difficult to compensate for even with large financial investments.
Despite the difficult situation, Ukrainian women are actively influencing business development, creating new jobs and introducing innovations. Their activities demonstrate that entrepreneurship in Ukraine today is not only about profit, but also about sustainability and social impact.
