Ukrainians can again receive temporary protection in the EU

Ukrainians who have returned from Europe are once again seeking refuge abroad due to rocket attacks. The EU provides an opportunity to re-obtain temporary protection status.

In connection with strengthening rocket attacks on Ukrainian cities, citizens who returned from Europe are again forced to seek refuge abroad. Important information for them is that EU countries provide the possibility of re-acquiring the status of temporary protection.

According to the EU directive, Ukrainians who left the country after February 24, 2022, have the right to asylum in EU countries, even if they previously refused this status.

Conditions for obtaining repeated protection in different countries

  • Germany: It is necessary to submit an application to the migration service.
  • Slovakia: It is possible to obtain the status, even if it was already obtained in another country.
  • Netherlands: RTB status provides rights to asylum, healthcare, employment and education
  • Spain: Protection is granted until March 2025 with the possibility of extension, but without the right to choose the place of residence.
  • Portugal: All refugees are accepted, even with previous status in another country. The status is issued for a year with the possibility of extension twice for 6 months
  • Poland, Switzerland, the Czech Republic: Re-protection may be refused.

Important information for refugees

  • You must register for temporary protection status, but the process may vary from country to country. It is recommended to clarify the details at the consulate of the chosen country.
  • Short-term trips to Ukraine (up to 1 month) are allowed without loss of status.
  • Refugees can move freely in the Schengen zone, but the status rights remain only in the country that granted protection.
  • Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Romania still control internal borders.
  • The terms of protection depend on the country. For example, in Spain, protection is provided until March 2025 with the possibility of extension
