Vatican prepares for 400th anniversary of St. Peter’s Basilica’s consecration

The Vatican has unveiled a large-scale program of events to mark the 400th anniversary of the dedication of St. Peter’s Basilica, which will be celebrated on November 18, 2026. The celebrations will start on February 20 with the inauguration of the new Via Crucis and will end with a festive mass with the participation of Pope Leo XIV.

The celebration will combine spiritual, cultural and technological initiatives designed to make the stay of millions of pilgrims and tourists in the Vatican more comfortable and meaningful. One of the key innovations will be a multilingual liturgical platform with real-time translation into 60 languages. It was created in collaboration with the Dicastery for Communication and the company Translated. Visitors will be able to listen to the service in their own language via smartphone by scanning a QR code in the church. Simultaneous translation will be provided by the artificial intelligence system Lara.

In addition, an updated Smart Pass reservation system will be introduced, which will help regulate the flow of visitors and reduce queues.

Access to the architectural and artistic spaces of the basilica will also be expanded for the anniversary. Pilgrims will be able to visit the entire terrace with three sections, the octagonal halls with models of Antonio da Sangallo the Younger and Michelangelo’s dome, as well as some of the archive exhibits. The terrace will feature a permanent exhibition on the history of the shrine and an expanded snack bar for visitors.

A separate event will be the presentation of the new Michelangelus font, created in collaboration with Microsoft and Studio Gusto. It was developed based on the handwriting of Michelangelo Buonarroti, the author of the basilica’s dome project. The font will be integrated into Microsoft Office, symbolically combining the heritage of the Renaissance with modern digital technologies.

Throughout the year, the basilica will host weekly spiritual meetings with prayer and sacred music, pastoral lectures and reflections on the Holy Scriptures dedicated to the figure of Saint Peter. A special pilgrimage route in the footsteps of Saints Peter and Paul in Rome and a theatrical production on the eve of their feast day on June 29 will also be prepared.

In addition to the cultural and spiritual program, the project “Beyond the Visible” is being implemented in collaboration with the energy company Eni. Its purpose is to monitor and preserve the structural stability of the basilica.

St. Peter’s Basilica is the largest Christian church in the world and one of the main symbols of Rome. The modern building is the second on this site: the first cathedral was built in the 4th century by order of Emperor Constantine. Construction of the current church began in 1506 and lasted more than a century. The project was worked on by outstanding masters of the era – Donato Bramante, Raphael Santi, Michelangelo Buonarroti and Lorenzo Bernini.

The length of the cathedral is about 211 meters, it can accommodate up to 60 thousand people, of which 20 thousand are seated. The dome, 136.6 meters high, is considered the tallest in the world. Michelangelo designed it to appear light, despite its weight of about 14 thousand tons. The square in front of the temple, created by Bernini, has the shape of an ellipse, and the colonnades symbolize the “motherly embrace of the church”, open to all believers.
