Voice of Ukrainian children of war: Zhytomyr schoolboy will participate in the meeting of the UN Children’s Council
The participation of Ukrainian teenagers in international institutions is increasingly becoming of great significance, as it is an opportunity to directly convey the experience of a generation growing up in wartime to those who influence global decisions in the field of child rights protection. The victory of Zhytomyr schoolboy Yevheniy Hnatovsky in the competition among children who have a deep understanding of the problems of their peers’ lives during wartime opened the way for him to participate in a meeting of the Council for Children’s Affairs at the United Nations.
After the announcement of the results of the competition, in which children who are able to deeply understand the challenges faced by their peers during the war took part, it became known that a student of grade 9-B of Lyceum No. 4 in Zhytomyr received the right to represent Ukraine at the international level. His victory does not seem accidental, given the selection criteria, which included not only the ability to express opinions, but also the ability to explain experiences and visions of the future in a reasoned manner.
The content of the competition focused on topics that directly relate to the daily lives of children during the war, so participants had to demonstrate an understanding of the psychological, educational and social aspects of this experience, which shapes their worldview. In this environment, where personal stories are intertwined with broader social processes, Yevheniy managed not only to outline the problems, but also to show them in the context of a shared children’s experience that goes beyond the boundaries of a single city or school.
The opportunity to speak at a meeting of the UN Children’s Council involves participating in a dialogue where children’s voices can influence the discussion of policies aimed at their protection and development. In this sense, the participation of the Ukrainian schoolchild becomes part of a broader process, when international organizations try to take into account the real stories of children from regions experiencing armed conflicts.
It is particularly noteworthy that the experience that Yevhenii will present is formed in conditions where the usual ideas about childhood in peacetime are changing under the influence of danger, loss and constant uncertainty. That is why his speech can become an important source of information for decision-makers, because it reflects not statistics, but the living perspective of a generation growing up in difficult circumstances.
At the same time, such an event is also important for Ukrainian society, because it demonstrates that teenagers are able not only to adapt to difficult conditions, but also to participate in shaping the discussion about their own future. Through such initiatives, it is possible to see how individual experience is transformed into a collective voice that resonates internationally and draws attention to topics that are not always central to the global agenda.
Thus, the participation of a Zhytomyr schoolchild in a meeting of the UN Children’s Council goes beyond personal achievement, as it opens up a space for presenting the experience of Ukrainian children in a broader international context, where every testimony matters and can influence the understanding of the reality in which a new generation is being formed.
