President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi and US President Donald Trump met in New York on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. Immediately after the talks, the leaders held an unannounced press conference.
According to Trump, today was a very productive day on both sides. Representing the Ukrainian president, he called Volodymyr Zelenskyi a “brave man fighting a hellish battle”.
Zelensky, in turn, spoke about the situation at the front. He said that thanks to the support of the United States, the Ukrainian military has de-occupied 360 square meters in recent months. km of territory and captured 1,000 Russian soldiers. The Ukrainian president added that currently Ukraine has good news on the battlefield, but we want to end the war with your help.
“We have great respect for the struggle that Ukraine is waging”, – said Trump.
He also emphasized that Ukraine is now “very successfully stopping this powerful army” occupiers.
Separately, Zelenskyi informed about the meeting of the first ladies of Ukraine and the USA “regarding Ukrainian children”, referring to minor Ukrainians abducted by the Russian occupiers. He thanked Trump’s wife for “personal participation” in this matter.
In general, the speeches of both leaders were laconic. They emphasized that they have “many more meetings”. According to Trump, “it seems that the war will not end soon”. At the same time, he admitted that the Russian economy is now in a terrible state, it is collapsing.
In response to a question about Russia’s violation of the airspace of other states, including NATO countries, Trump said that NATO countries should shoot down Russian planes if they invade their airspace. Asked by journalists whether the US would support NATO allies in the event of a Russian plane being shot down, he replied that “it depends on the circumstances”.
When asked about his attitude to the Russian president, Trump avoided a direct answer, saying that he was ready to comment on it “in about a month”. He also promised to “discuss later” the issue of American security guarantees that Ukraine relies on.
