When adaptation in kindergarten becomes a challenge: how to strengthen a child’s immunity in wartime

In Ukraine, the war continues for the fourth year, and even those regions where children can attend kindergartens live under the pressure of constant threats and instability. Babies who grow up in such a reality often have weakened immunity not only due to seasonal infections or weather changes, but also due to psychological stress, an anxious atmosphere, disruption of the daily routine and insufficient number of walks in the fresh air. For many families, even the usual adaptation to kindergarten turns into a double challenge — both physical and emotional. During this period, it is extremely important to support the child’s body so that it can cope with new conditions, a large team and frequent viral attacks.

Child neurologist Olga Toporkova explains, that the first weeks in kindergarten are a kind of test for the immune system, because the child enters an environment with new bacteria, a changed regime and a large number of contacts. At the same time, the correct organization of life and nutrition helps to significantly reduce the risk of diseases and make adaptation smoother.

Water is the basis of immune stability

One of the key points is adequate water consumption. According to the norms, a child needs about 30 milliliters for every kilogram of weight per day. We are talking about still water, which, if desired, can be slightly acidified with a few drops of lemon juice or replaced with an unsweetened brew.

Water supports the work of the lymphatic system, accelerates the recovery of mucous membranes, which is important for the prevention of tonsillitis and rhinitis, and also facilitates digestion. So that the child drinks with pleasure, the doctor advises giving him a personal bottle with a bright design – this little psychological trick works without fail.

Less sugar means more protection

An excess of simple carbohydrates, such as sweets, pastries and sweetened drinks, puts an additional burden on the immune system. This reduces its ability to quickly and effectively respond to viruses and bacteria. It is best to replace such products with fruits, berries, natural yogurt without sugar or nuts. Such a replacement is not only useful, but also helps the child to form good eating habits from an early age.

Sleep as daily recovery

Chronic lack of sleep negatively affects immunity, making the child more vulnerable to infections. Preschoolers need 10-12 hours of sleep per day, and it is important that they fall asleep and wake up at the same time. This regime helps the body to work stably, and the nervous system to reduce the level of stress.

Walks are natural hardening

Daily stay in the fresh air for 1.5-2 hours is a mandatory element of maintaining health. Even in cool weather, you should not give up on walks: they strengthen the immune system and contribute to better adaptation to temperature fluctuations. The doctor warns against overwarming the child — overheating is no less harmful than hypothermia.

Vitamins as an auxiliary resource

In the autumn-winter period, when it is difficult to obtain a sufficient amount of vitamin C from food, it is worth additionally consuming it in a dose of about 250 mg per day, especially in combination with bioflavonoids, which enhance the effect. As for vitamin D, the recommended dose for children under six years of age for preventive purposes is 1000 IU per day. Before starting to take, the doctor advises to take an analysis to determine the real level and, if necessary, adjust the dosage.

Emotional support is part of immune protection

Adaptation to kindergarten is not only a physical test. Emotional stress can directly affect health, so the role of parents in this period cannot be underestimated. The calm tone and confidence of the parents help the child feel safe, and this, in turn, reduces the impact of stress on the body.

Therefore, proper nutrition, drinking regime, adequate sleep, daily activity, vitamin support and emotional warmth from the family are simple but effective steps that allow the child to more easily pass the stage of adaptation to the new team. In wartime, these rules become even more important, because every element of caring for a child’s health is a contribution to his future and resistance to the challenges of time.
