Children of war

Young Ukrainian inventors won 16 awards in Poland for developments in artificial intelligence, energy and security

Despite the difficult conditions of studying during the war, air raids, distance learning and constant interruptions in the educational process, Ukrainian schoolchildren continue to engage in science, create technological developments and show high results at the international level. One such example was the performance of the Ukrainian team at the International Exhibition of Inventions and Innovations INTARG-2026 in the Polish city of Katowice.

Ukrainian team at INTARG-2026

The Ukrainian team included 13 students who presented their own research and technical projects in various areas. As reported by Serhii Babak, the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Education, Science and Innovation, following the exhibition, they won 16 awards, including 6 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze medals.

In addition to the main awards, three more Ukrainian projects received special awards from the exhibition’s international partners. This result showed that Ukrainian schoolchildren are able to compete with participants from other countries in areas that require deep knowledge, practical thinking and the ability to turn ideas into working solutions.

Ukrainian projects included works related to security, energy, artificial intelligence, programming and natural sciences. Some of the developments had applied significance for war conditions, as they concerned object detection, data processing and danger warning.

Ukrainian schoolchildren presented a sound location system based on MEMS microphones, which can be used to determine the direction or location of a sound signal. Also among the works was a system for automatic detection and geolocation of objects from drone video, which combines image analysis, data processing algorithms and practical observation tasks.

The study of the possibilities of using hydrogen in the energy system of Ukraine attracted special attention. This direction is important for the future of energy, as the country needs new solutions for the restoration, sustainability and modernization of energy infrastructure.

Projects on artificial intelligence, medicine and programming

Among the noted works were developments related to digital technologies. One of the projects concerned the optimization of web server architecture for high-performance processing of HTTP requests. Such a topic requires an understanding of programming, server load and the principles of fast data transfer.

Another direction concerned artificial intelligence. The Neural Alert system was created to warn about air raids and demonstrates how schoolchildren use modern algorithms to solve problems related to human safety.

The natural block of Ukrainian works included research into the antioxidant properties of ethanol extract of St. John’s wort. Such a project shows that the interest of young scientists is not limited to technology, because biology, chemistry and medicine also remain important areas of school research.

Participation in the international exhibition is of particular importance for Ukrainian schoolchildren, because their education in recent years has been taking place in conditions that are difficult to compare with the usual educational process. Many children study during alarms, relocations, power outages and forced changes of schools, but continue to work on complex scientific topics.

Victories at INTARG-2026 show that Ukrainian children do not lose interest in research and technology even in difficult circumstances. Their projects are related to real challenges – security, energy, artificial intelligence, medicine and digital solutions, so such results are important not only for the participants themselves, but also for Ukrainian science and education in general.

According to Serhiy Babak, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Education, Science and Innovation, the success of the Ukrainian team testifies to the high potential of the young generation of researchers, who are already presenting their developments at the international level. For the schoolchildren, this victory was confirmation that their knowledge, perseverance and work can be noticed far beyond the borders of Ukraine.
