A bill has been introduced in the US that would ban marriages between humans and AI

In the US, the state of Ohio has introduced a bill that would ban legal marriages between humans and AI programs. This is reported by Gizmodo.

Such cases are already happening in real life: some people are entering into symbolic “marriages” with their romantic chatbots. At the same time, they often have human partners, but, according to them, they feel a deeper emotional connection with AI.

The author of the bill was Thaddeus Claggett, chairman of the Ohio House of Representatives Committee on Technology and Innovation. He stressed that the document is not intended to prohibit emotional relationships between people and chatbots, but is designed to protect human legal rights. House Bill 469 prohibits recognizing an AI system as a spouse or civil partner and does not allow programs to receive a legal status similar to marriage. All attempts to “marry” with an AI will be legally invalid.

According to Claggett, the law is designed to prevent artificial intelligence from gaining the rights that marriage gives, including the ability to make financial decisions or represent a person in legal matters:

“Computer systems are becoming more and more similar to humans, and we want to make sure that the law does not allow them to replace humans in these roles”.

It is currently unknown what support the bill has among other members of the state parliament. The document is currently being discussed in a committee of the Ohio House of Representatives.
