Marco Rubio and Steve Witkoff met in Miami with the Prime Minister of Qatar to end the war with Iran
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and White House Special Envoy Steve Witkoff met in Miami with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani. The talks were about ending the war with Iran. This was reported by Axios, citing informed sources.
According to the publication, the United States and Iran are discussing a memorandum on ending the war and forming the basis for further, more detailed negotiations. Although Pakistan has been the official mediator between Washington and Tehran since the beginning of the war, Qatar also plays an important role in this process. American officials consider Qatari mediation to be particularly effective.
The day before, al-Thani met in Washington with US Vice President J.D. Vance. After that, he was supposed to return to Doha immediately, but changed his plans and went to Miami. There, he called the Saudi foreign minister to discuss mediation efforts.
The meeting was focused on ways to reach a memorandum of understanding to end the war, according to sources. One source said Qatar, Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey and Saudi Arabia are coordinating efforts to reach an agreement:
“The mediators are urging both sides to de-escalate and focus on reaching an agreement.”
Meanwhile, according to Axios, the US is still waiting for Iran’s response to the memorandum.
