A nationwide 24-hour strike began in Italy due to Prime Minister Giorgi Maloney’s refusal to recognize Palestine. The action was organized by several unions to protest the current policy on Gaza, reports CNN.

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in more than 80 cities, blocking public transport, railways, schools and ports.

The police dispersed the protesters, in particular in Milan they used tear gas. At the same time, the participants of the action threw stones at the security forces. In addition to Milan, protests took place in Genoa and Livorno, where port workers blocked roads to protest the possible transport or supply of weapons to Israel. In Bologna, hundreds of people also blocked the streets.

In general, tens of thousands of people came out in support of the Palestinians in more than 80 cities of the country. Public transport, railways, schools, ports and a number of other public services were suspended due to the strike. In addition to demanding an end to arms shipments to Israel through Italian ports, the protesters called on the Italian government to join other countries that have already recognized Palestine as a state.
