A state of emergency has been declared in Sumy due to flooding of houses and roads
A natural emergency has been declared in Sumy due to rapid warming, heavy precipitation, and intensive snow melting, the Sumy Regional Emergency Management Agency reports.
Water has already flooded residential areas, private homes, and critical infrastructure facilities. To eliminate the consequences, the State Emergency Service and the municipal enterprises “Sumizhylkomservis”, “Miskvodokanal”, “Misksvitlo” and the city rescue and diving service were involved.
Specialists are pumping water out of yards and residential buildings, cleaning rainwater wells and drainage canals. In parallel, preventive work is being carried out on problem areas of roads to avoid further deterioration of the situation.
“We are working around the clock to minimize the consequences of flooding and ensure the safety of residents,” – the State Emergency Service emphasized.
A difficult hydrological situation is also observed in other regions. In Kirovohrad region, the Vys River overflowed its banks, and rescuers responded to calls more than 120 times. Private yards, basements and cellars were flooded, and traffic on the Slobodka – Krasny Khutir – Kobylyanka highway was temporarily restricted. A detour was organized through Yampil and Yaroshivka.
Flooding problems were also recorded in Mykolaiv and Cherkasy regions. In Mykolaiv region, water covered 49 land plots in 17 settlements. Rescuers continue to monitor the water level in small rivers, as there is a risk of new flooding.
