An environmentalist warned about critical air pollution in Ukraine

These figures are not final, as the system of general collection of this information has partially ceased to function.

In Ukraine, the level of air pollution has tripled since 2022. The most polluted zone is the regions where hostilities are taking place. About this stated head of the All-Ukrainian Environmental League Tetyana Tymochko.

“Now we have about 10-12 million tons of harmful substances emitted into the atmosphere – this is a catastrophic figure, which is three times higher than our annual emissions when the industry was operating at full capacity.”, – she noted.

Tymochko emphasized that these figures are not final, as the system of general collection of this information partially ceased to function. “A significant amount of equipment that collected this information has been destroyed”, she added.

According to her, a red opaque wall of dust can be observed in the Donetsk region.

“These are all emissions at a long distance, tens of kilometers, but this is completely polluted air, saturated with harmful substances from shell explosions. And these are not only chemical substances, but also insoluble dust particles, small particles, a large amount of soot from fires. This all creates solid darkness that stands over certain territories without even being moved by air masses”, — explained the ecologist.

She noted that the most polluted zone is almost the entire territory where hostilities are taking place.

“These are not just regions, but parts of regions, such as Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhya, Kherson and Mykolaiv regions. This is, first of all, the contact line, which is the most polluted territory of Ukraine. And it’s not only the air, because all the masses of chemical substances and toxins are gradually deposited on the soil, vegetation and water bodies. All this is transformed into other chemical compounds, creating additional threats and risks to the environment, life and health of people.”Tymochko concluded.
