Apple’s AI team has begun development of a ChatGPT competitor

Apple has created a new team to develop a search engine with elements of artificial intelligence that can answer common questions, similar to ChatGPT. The project was named Answers, Knowledge and Information (AKI), informs Bloomberg.

The company is considering several options for using this technology: it can be implemented as a separate application or integrated into Siri, Spotlight and Safari. Vacancies for engineers specializing in search algorithms and infrastructure have already appeared on Apple’s official website. Apple is working on creating its own AI system that will function autonomously, without the involvement of third-party platforms.

CEO Tim Cook said Apple is increasing its investment in artificial intelligence and is preparing an update to Siri with deeper personalization, enhanced privacy, and full native integration into the iOS system. According to him, the updated assistant should appear in 2026, but the company is already actively reorienting resources to achieve this goal.

Such actions were in response to concerns from investors who criticized Apple’s slow pace of development in the field of generative AI. Unlike its competitors, the company has yet to introduce any public product that could compete with ChatGPT or similar solutions.

We will remind you that in June there was information that Apple is considering the possibility of acquiring the startup Perplexity. Such a deal could help the company build its own AI-powered search platform. At the same time, negotiations are at an early stage, and the startup has not yet received any formal offer.
