Britain’s foreign minister calls on NATO to increase defense spending to 2.5% of GDP

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron called on NATO member states to increase defense spending to 2.5% of GDP, stressing that “the world has become more dangerous, unstable and confrontational.”

He writes about it Politic.

Speaking at the National Cyber Security Center on Thursday, May 9, Cameron criticized European allies for not wanting to invest in defense “even when our continent is at war,” referring to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“It’s time to recognize this and act accordingly – not in a year or two, not in a few months, but now”, – emphasized Cameron.

The UK aims to reach 2.5% of GDP by 2030. NATO’s current defense spending target is 2% of GDP.

Cameron’s statement came amid growing security concerns in Europe following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. NATO is already taking steps to strengthen its eastern defenses, but some experts believe the alliance needs to do more to deter Russian aggression.
