Canadian Prime Minister introduces new cabinet
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who won the last election, presented a new government. According to him, this cabinet will contribute to the formation of renewed relations with the United States. About this reported Reuters agency.
“Canadians have elected this new government with a strong mandate to define a new economic and security relationship with the United States and build a stronger economy. This focused team will act on that mandate for change with urgency and determination.” – said in a statement from Carney’s office.
Carney reduced the number of ministerial posts from 39 to 29, while retaining a number of key government officials. In particular, Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne and Dominique LeBlanc, who is responsible for economic relations with the US, kept their positions. The Ministry of External Affairs will now be headed by Anita Anand. The previous head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Melanie Joly, will take over the post of Minister of Industry.
Khrystia Freeland will become the Minister of Transport and Internal Trade in the new government. Former Goldman Sachs banker Tim Hodgson has been appointed Minister of Natural Resources, succeeding Jonathan Wilkinson.
We will remind that on April 28, 2025, early parliamentary elections were held in Canada, which were announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney after the dissolution of Parliament on March 23. According to their results, a new composition of the government should be formed.
The Liberal Party, led by Carney, won 166 seats in the House of Commons, taking first place. However, at least 172 mandates are needed to form a majority, so a minority government will be formed in the country.
