Concluding statements of the leaders of the countries after the Peace Summit

“The support of Western and other leaders at the Swiss peace summit for Ukraine demonstrates that the rule of international law can be restored. I hope we can achieve results as soon as possible.” – said the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, after the two-day Peace Summit.
According to the President of Ukraine, it is about proving to the whole world that the UN Charter can be fully restored.
In the final document of the summit on Ukraine released on Sunday, representatives of the participating countries said that Russia’s war in Ukraine leads to “large-scale human suffering and destruction”, but the path to peace requires the participation of all parties.
The document confirms commitment to the “territorial integrity of all states, including Ukraine.”
The declaration also called for a full exchange of prisoners of war and the return of deported Ukrainian children.
“The ongoing war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine continues to cause large-scale human suffering and destruction, to create risks and crises with global consequences.” – said in the communiqué.
In addition, the nuclear safety group considered the unstable situation related to the safety of Ukrainian nuclear power plants, in particular Zaporizhzhya, where all reactors have been shut down since mid-April.
During the summit, issues of reducing the risk of an accident due to a malfunction or an attack on nuclear facilities of Ukraine were also discussed. The document emphasizes that the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant should come under the full control of Ukraine.
The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that the West will support Ukraine as long as necessary. She emphasized that no country would agree to the terms of peace proposed by Vladimir Putin the day before.
On Friday, Putin demanded a de facto surrender from Kyiv as a condition for peace talks. Putin’s call to Ukraine to withdraw troops from the south and east of the country was rejected at the summit.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the participants of the forum agreed to continue working in special groups after the end of the summit and that as soon as the “action plans for peace” are ready, the way to the second summit will be open.
“We agreed to start work in special groups after the summit on concrete ideas, proposals and developments that can restore security in various aspects. When the peace action plans are ready, when every step is worked out, the way will be opened for the second peace summit.” – said Zelensky at the joint final press conference.
During its conduct, Von der Leyen stated that the path to peace will require patience and determination.
“We know that peace in Ukraine will not be achieved in one step, it will be a whole process. These were not peace negotiations, because Putin is not serious about ending the war, he insists on capitulation, on the concession of Ukrainian territory – even the one that is not occupied today.”, she said.
At the same time, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that his country is ready to organize a conference at the level of foreign ministers on the issue of human casualties suffered during the war.
Swiss President Viola Amherd said in her closing remarks:
“One key question remains: how and when Russia can be included in this process. We have heard this in many of your speeches: a strong (peace agreement) must involve both sides.”
“Russia should join this process because it is responsible for starting the process called war”, – said the President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili.
