Cryptocurrencies worth 300 million dollars were stolen by Japanese hackers
Digital assets worth a total of ¥48 billion, or about $305 million, were stolen by hackers from Japan. Criminals have launched an attack on one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the country – DMM Bitcoin.
The exchange, which serves about 370,000 customers, suffered significant losses. Despite the fact that the attack was detected quite quickly, hackers removed 4,503 bitcoins from users’ wallets.
Within seconds of the start of the attack, DMM Bitcoin specialists suspended all operations for the withdrawal of digital assets. Registration of new accounts has also been temporarily suspended.
All users of the exchange were informed about temporary technical works. DMM Bitcoin representatives have assured that all customers who lost their assets due to the attackers’ attack will be reimbursed.
Despite the significant amount of losses, this is not the biggest attack on a cryptocurrency trading platform in Japan. In 2018, hackers attacked the country’s largest exchange, Coincheck. Then the attackers managed to withdraw digital assets worth about 500 million US dollars. Also last year, hackers robbed the Japanese cryptocurrency exchange Bitpoint. They stole $32 million from the accounts of the company’s customers.
The cryptocurrency market is actively developing in Japan. The country’s pension fund, which is the largest in the world, announced its intention to invest part of its funds in digital assets.
